Expectations and Panel Format
Please read these descriptions of various conference roles which will help clarify different aspects of the following schedule:
Presenter Expectations
All presenters must submit their papers to the conference e-mail (info@genderandpolipsych.com) at least three weeks prior to the conference for reviewers and participants to read them. The final deadline is February 11, 2011. They will be posted on the conference website. Given that participants will have read their work ahead of time, presenters will have very limited time, 10-15 minutes, to present their work.
Discussion Leader Expectations
One senior colleague will serve as a discussion leader in each research panel. This person will initiate the session, keep us on task, pose several overarching and thematic discussion questions to engage the audience, and sum things up in conclusion.
Participant Expectations
As a participant at the conference, the papers will be available to you on the conference website two weeks prior. We ask that ALL participants read all the conference papers to be presented. This will bring the level of dialogue about the research – and about themes across projects- to a higher level. We also ask each participant to carefully review the conference schedule and their conference roles. Everyone should prepare to engage in all conference activities!
Paper Reviewer Expectations
The reviews generated for papers presented at this conference will be like journal manuscript reviews plus! Reviewers will read the paper and write a formal manuscript review as they would in the peer review process, including very specific feedback on how to improve the work. In addition, reviewers should prepare to share their ideas regarding the next steps to improve the paper as well as specific suggestions as to possible publication outlets. Note that there is a one hour session for reviewers to meet privately with the authors to give their feedback on the day their research is presented.
Roundtable Leader Expectations
Throughout the conference, there will be several roundtables. Typically two senior scholars with interest or expertise in the area will convene the roundtable and prepare to share brief comments on the topic before opening the session to audience questions and general discussion. The format may vary slightly according to topic area or style of the leaders. Roundtable Panelists should coordinate their plans sometime prior to the session.
Mentor Groups will convene throughout the conference for focused discussions.

*Mentor Group Facilitator Expectations
At various points throughout the conference, we have created a set of discussion questions to focus our informal conversations to points of interest. The intent is to foster productive mentoring discussions in less formal settings than, say, the roundtable format. Each mentor group, which will be composed of a group of junior and senior scholars, will have one member to serve as their facilitator. The facilitator’s role is to introduce the “discussion starter” suggestions from the conference organizers – for example during one lunch the questions focus on managing an effective research agenda. Each Facilitator will receive a color-coded list of questions to spark discussion. The facilitator can move the group through the questions as time allows. Note that the conversations should be on the general topic area we’ve designated, but you are not obligated to use all the questions provided, particularly if your group has a productive discussion going without them.
Note that Office 102 A or 206 A will be available for nursing mothers.
